Teen Advocates Sharing Knowledge TEEN ADVOCATES SHARING KNOWLEDGE The YWCA is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women and girls, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen communities. The YWCA Malden was established in 1927 and is one of the longest serving nonprofits in the Mystic Valley area. The YWCA TASK (Teen Advocates Sharing Knowledge) program captures these principles in this girl only program. The TASK program is for Malden High School girls in grades 9-12. This peer leadership program provides opportunities for girls to become leaders in their community. TASK provides a unique opportunity for girls to become engaged in their community while building self-esteem and confidence to blossom into successful adulthood. It is important for girls to develop relationships that promote social and emotional health while promoting positive youth development. This girl only program has proven to be successful because girls receive the maximum benefit when they participate in a girl only program where they're free to express themselves, ask questions, and take on leadership roles they might not otherwise. It is important for girls to be role models in their community and the YWCA provides them with that opportunity. This program allows girls to be connected on a number of platforms with peer-to-peer connections. TASK offers public speaking training, career exploration, and connections with local and state organizations. Gun Violence Prevention TASK held a Town Hall Meeting at the Malden Teen Enrichment Center (MTEC), bringing together local officials and experts to foster understanding and collaboration to address these challenges. Engaging youth and community members in discussions empowers them to voice their concerns and contribute to solutions in regard to youth safety. What about HER? With funding provided by a grant from the Greater Boston Council on Alcoholism, our TASK girls spoke with women in recovery from substance use, and gave them a greater platform to learn about what it truly means to be in recovery. These images from locations in Malden are paired with the YWCA TASK girl’s personal narratives to create a compelling visual and emotional representation of youth substance use disorder (SUD), where adolescents or young adults misuse drugs or alcohol in ways that negatively impact their lives. Overcoming youth substance abuse disorder is a deeply personal and often complex journey, but it’s absolutely possible with the right support, understanding, and resources. (see the QR code for support). This project was made possible by the generosity from the Greater Boston Council on Alcoholism. Faces of Recovery This project began with funding by a grant from the Greater Boston Council on Alcoholism. TASK Advisor/Malden is Moving! Coordinator, Chris Murphy, and Malden Overcoming Addiction, worked collaboratively in designing this project. Their goal was to raise awareness of substance use disorders.

FERRYWAY PROGRAMMING Minds in Motion Afterschool Program Monday through Friday 2:15P-5:30P. Those who come to Minds in Motion receive homework help, an afternoon snack, and varied activities that include art, science and math. Minds in Motion is $27.89/day* During school vacation weeks and summer break full day childcare is offered. Vacation Week and Summer Break childcare is $52.03/day* *Minds in Motion accepts state funded vouchers through EEC as well as has limited income eligible slots available that families can apply for. 21st Century Community Learning Centers At 21st CCLC we focus on grade level ELA outcomes through enriching, hands on programs and activities. The program is offered at no cost for Ferryway students in grade 3-8. Operates: Monday- Thursday from the end of the school day until 5:00pm . 21st CCLC is Department of Education grant based programming offered by the YWCA Malden, in partnership with the Ferryway School. Washington Street Afterschool Children are offered academic support, along with activities that help encourage social, emotional and cognitive development. We promote a respect for cultural diversity, work to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills and inspire children to build positive relationships.
