  • Worksmart | YWCA

WORKSMART Who we are Worksmart is an afterschool program that runs in partnership with the YWCA and Malden High School. The program’s focus is college and career readiness skills, the development of 21st century skills, and leadership development. The club meets weekly and works on resume development, mock interviews, financial literacy, team building, college application components, college financial aid form assistance, and more! As a group, we’ve attended various college field trips to increase college exposure, as well as explored local businesses and career opportunities. Financial Education One of the important pieces of Worksmart is learning how to make sure they're comfortable with finances, this includes learning how to fill out taxes, to understanding personal credit. All participants receive a good foundation of what it means to be financially literate. Team Building Practice In December the participants of Worksmart got the chance to visit one of our local businesses in Malden! Rock Spot Malden is a new climbing gym built specifically for boldering, a type of climbing where you don't need a rope to climb. The Worksmart participants learned how to use the gym to their best advantage, and got a chance to cheer each other on!

  • TASK | YWCA

Teen Advocates Sharing Knowledge TEEN ADVOCATES SHARING KNOWLEDGE The YWCA is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women and girls, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen communities. The YWCA Malden was established in 1927 and is one of the longest serving nonprofits in the Mystic Valley area. The YWCA TASK (Teen Advocates Sharing Knowledge) program captures these principles in this girl only program. The TASK program is for Malden High School girls in grades 9-12. This peer leadership program provides opportunities for girls to become leaders in their community. TASK provides a unique opportunity for girls to become engaged in their community while building self-esteem and confidence to blossom into successful adulthood. It is important for girls to develop relationships that promote social and emotional health while promoting positive youth development. This girl only program has proven to be successful because girls receive the maximum benefit when they participate in a girl only program where they're free to express themselves, ask questions, and take on leadership roles they might not otherwise. It is important for girls to be role models in their community and the YWCA provides them with that opportunity. This program allows girls to be connected on a number of platforms with peer-to-peer connections. TASK offers public speaking training, career exploration, and connections with local and state organizations. What about HER? With funding provided by a grant from the Greater Boston Council on Alcoholism, our TASK girls spoke with women in recovery from substance use, and gave them a greater platform to learn about what it truly means to be in recovery. Faces of Recovery This project began with funding by a grant from the Greater Boston Council on Alcoholism. TASK Advisor/Malden is Moving! Coordinator, Chris Murphy, and Malden Overcoming Addiction, worked collaboratively in designing this project. Their goal was to raise awareness of substance use disorders. In November, the TASK girls presented their Faces of Recovery project to the Malden Community. The event was attended by the Mayor of Malden, Gary Christenson, as well as members of the School Committee, and a Massachusetts State Representative. All of whom got to see the impact of the project and just how important it is to create more awareness about substance abuse and what resources are out there for teens. Presenting to the School Committee On Monday, January 9th, the TASK girls presented Faces of Recovery to the Malden School Committee to further the cause. Project Reception
